Where Fluorescent Light Fixtures Are Popular

Fluorescent light fixtures can provide the lighting for any room of the house in a way that is cost effective and easy to maintain and they are also used frequently in many commercial buildings. It has to be said that fluorescent lighting is a source of considerable controversy as it was developed during the Second World War as a temporary expedient and was never intended to be used later for any significant length of time. The full spectrum of light is not given out leading to reports of people feeling sluggish and unable to function well under this type of lighting.

One of the advantages of fluorescent lighting is that it is easy to design and integrate with the rest of your room. While full size fluorescent lighting can be used anywhere it is commonly only used in kitchen areas within the home. The long white fitting is standard everywhere and the only variables are the size of the units which are needed and the power of the lamps that are used. Fluorescent lighting is chosen because it is cheap to run but you can save even more money by having the right size of lamp for your kitchen and no more.

Fluorescent lighting is also commonly used in office buildings but there are some countries that have outlawed this as the quality of light emitted is extremely poor. Money is saved on the initial installation and on the running of the lighting but these savings could easily be wiped out by an increase in absenteeism, a reduction in the quality of work performance, and higher staff turnover. It is recommended that a more suitable type of lighting be used in any public building or workplace where people have to work under artificial light for extended periods of time.

The use of fluorescent light fixtures in kitchens is long established and they usually throw out enough light to allow for any activity such as cooking or cleaning to occur without any problem. Only in oddly shaped kitchens is there likely to be a need for any other type of lighting to supplement what is already there. In an L-shaped kitchen for example it may be better to have two smaller lamps in each branch of the kitchen. In a situation where features of the layout are casting shadows it may be necessary to have another bulb which can be switched on when you need to work in a certain area.

The fluorescent bulb is now being used in a different and highly positive way to try to reduce the impact of daily living upon the environment. There are energy saving bulbs that feature a small fluorescent bulb molded into the shape of an incandescent bulb. These fluorescent bulbs give off the same level of light as an incandescent but they only use a fifth of the amount of electricity. The savings in power and in damage to the environment if everyone were to change just two or three bulbs in their house would be highly significant.

It is inevitable that fluorescent light fixtures are going to be mounted on the ceiling as this is where the light they give out will have the greatest effect. This is a job you can do for yourself if you have the right equipment but make sure that you are completely safe and that you do not have a problem with heights. There is always the possibility of getting a professional to do the work for you and this need not take long or be prohibitively expensive. It is only rarely that the lamps need changing in fluorescent light fixtures.
