Why Bathroom Lighting Fixtures Have Special Designs
Bathroom lighting fixtures need to be very different from those which are used throughout the rest of the home, and they need to be maintained in perfect condition. A bathroom will always have water in it and there will be steam created regularly. These elements have the potential to create a great deal of harm if they come into contact with electricity and with electrical lights so make sure that your fixtures are good enough to prevent any serious problems.
As with many of the other light fixtures those for the bathroom are often created to be on the ceiling. This has certain advantages one of which is to distance the light source from the people using the room who may be covered in water and trying to dry themselves off. Even some wall fixtures are within potential reach if someone slips over and reaches out a hand to grab whatever is there out of instinct. There are also disadvantages though in that steam will rise and go to the top of the room where it could easily cause a short circuit. Bathroom lighting needs to fully protect wiring and terminals against water.
It is possible to find bathroom light fixtures which are wall mounted, and these are usually in addition to the ceiling lighting and not instead of it. The wall mounted units will provide extra light where it is needed near to the bath, and they are usually on a different switch. The outer casing of such a light fixture will often slope so that there is a pointed end nearest to the bath, allowing the steam to just run up the outer casing. Of course, the casing needs to be completely watertight to prevent the possibility of serious problems.
All bathroom lighting fixtures need to be fully encased for obvious reasons, and this will necessarily limit the number of potential designs and structures which can be used. Light fixtures for bathrooms are nearly always made from plastic because it is completely non-conducting and also highly durable. As most bathrooms are decorated in light pastel shades, most light fixtures for bathrooms are also light in color if not completely white. Many of them are an opaque type of white plastic which will keep steam and water out for as long as the fixture remains in good condition. It is vital to replace a bathroom light casing at the first sign of disrepair.
Now that plastic can be molded into virtually any shape there is a potential for creating bathroom light fixtures which go beyond the traditional designs. This is rare though, and you will normally find light fixtures for bathrooms in the form of a globe or a simple cubic cover. Even in rooms where the bathroom suite itself is something more ornate there is rarely a temptation to do anything with the light fixtures. But that is not to say that it cannot be done if you have your own original idea. Just be sure that the safety aspects are not in any way compromised.
You can find a wide selection of bathroom lighting fixtures in any hardware store, or you can shop online for an even greater choice. Online shopping makes sense for bathroom lighting, because shipping charges are usually based on weight and you only buy them rarely. The online catalogs will have the greatest variety and you will be able to browse all of them in one sitting without leaving home. It can also be useful to see pictures of the actual settings in which you can use bathroom lighting fixtures.
